Something I Treasure

Write one well-written and thought-out paragraph. Use complete sentences and correct grammar. Upper classmen should be writing paragraphs with compound and complex sentences that are a minimum of six sentences long. Things to consider

  1. eye contact
  2. nervousness
  3. audience feedback
  4. preparation
  5. speaking rate (too fast? too slow? too many pauses?)
  6. gestures (Did you do any?)
  7. poise and presence
  8. introduction and conclusion
  9. organization
  10. facial expressions
  11. visual aid

What went well? What do you need to work on for the next speech? Be as specific as possible!

In addition, leave feedback for at least two students. Feedback should be specific and original

This was a challenging speech for me...initially I was unsure of what to choose for the topic of this speech and when I did choose one, I was worried I would not have enough to talk about. In the end though, I had plenty to talk about! Being such a long speech, I tried my best to just push past any stutters or stumbles I had, though they were noticable. I could have spent hours trying to get a perfect take but that sort of eliminates the point of a speech. I believe I've had better speeches and I'd like to try doing one in person to see how differently I speak in front of a live audience. I wrote quite a bit for this speech and my visual aid was present, although minimally so. Overall, I was pretty challenged by this speech but I was able to deliver it decently.

    1. Heyyyyyyy!! It's the first speech Iv'e heard from tfox245!! Well kid, I gotta admit, your eye contact was great on this one, and I think you did a nice job explaining what Faith-Inc was. I thought it was good that your speech was always centered on the confirmation process, because I know that some of the other speeches may have gone a bit tangent. Your volume seemed fine, but maybe a bit more inflection in the voice, but that's kinda hard considering that it was a recording and not in front of a live audience. Length of speech was solid, so I like what your'e doing, right idea.

    2. Good job. The topic wasn't what I was expecting to hear, but it obviously worked for you. Your rate of speech was spot on, especially for the length of the speech. Although you did have a visual aid, I think you could have made it a little more prominent within the speech. Besides that, a job well done.

  2. i feel that this speech is the best one ive done so far. it was nice to actually be able to write out a transcript, and just "read" my speech straight out. being able to pick exactly what i wanted to talk about, i was able to chose something that i felt really strongly about. it was a lot easier to slow down with this speech, which was necessary since we had a longer time requirement.

    1. Andrew I really enjoyed listening to this speech! Your intro was very strong and you continued that throughout the entirety of the speech. Also, I felt that you had a great message behind it. You spoke calmly and smoothly and I could tell you were well prepared for this one. Your visual aid was presented well and fit the message nicely. Definitely one of your better speeches!

  4. I think my speech went a little rough, I did a little practice before my speech. My speech was a little bit short in time. I was really trying to Mack eye contact, I think I did better than last two speeches. I was so nervous because I was not prepare for videotape, but I think it went ok.My speaking rate is ok. I did not talk really fast. My introduction and conclusion was good I think.

    1. I can tell transitioning to a different country can put a huge impact on someone's life. If I went to China and had to speak in front of a Chinese class (IN CHINESE), I would fail epically. I am always extremely impressed when you stand up there it make it look easier than you think. I believe the stories you tell are always lovely to hear. I feel you were loud enough and started your speech off well. Nice job!

    3. Your intro and conclusion was great. You don't need to be nervous in front of the camera. Just pretend it isn't there. Just speak the same way you would when its not there in front of you. Calm your nerves and be confident in front of the camera.

    4. Your speaking gets better with every speech we do. I can tell that you practice a lot because it sound good and professional.

  5. I felt this speech was a very easy one for me to open up on. I felt very comfortable standing up there in front of the class and talking about my grandmother. Comparing myself now to a few years ago, I would have to say I handle things differently when dealing with sad things. I do admit I am a sensitive guy, but I always have a smile on my face when I refer to something sad to me. Was it hard to talk about my grandmother? Yes, it was. However, I kept a smile on my face because I know she is looking down on me from heaven and is proud of who I am - and bragging about her. I know I did not practice much for this speech, but I have to say I practice less than I have to start this class because I gain more and more confidence standing up there that I fell it is easier on me. I always believe I start and end my speeches strongly and always maintain consistent eye contact. It seemed solid!

    3. Pfaff, I agree that you seemed to feel comfortable for this speech. I think that you did a great job on keeping the right tone for this kind of speech and remained solid all of the way through. Your eye contact was exceptional considering that it was manuscript and the volume was fine. At the beginning of the year I wasn't sure if I was going to get into your speeches, but they all are very entertaining and meaningful!!

    4. I really liked your speech and thought you were able to tell a very meaningful story and you got through talking about a very sad point in your life without even a single pause and that is very impressive.

  6. I initially thought that this speech was going to be hard because of how long it was, but when I finally figured out a topic it felt pretty easy. I knew from the beginning that this speech was going to have its difficulties because of it being a manuscript speech. Eye contact in my mind was a problem for me because I wanted to make sure I didn't lose my spot on my paper. It was also a little long. It went over the set time length of eight minutes. When I practiced I didn't have a problem with time. Their was so much I wanted to say but I knew stay within the time limit. Thanks to Mrs. Dennert, she gave me an extra 15 seconds. Things I needed to improve is my eye contact, calm my nerves, pace and volume.

    2. Ty, I felt you still did very well. You did not seem that nervous and I could hear you the entire time. I can understand that this speech took a little longer because most of us wanted to get the whole story out there. I could tell you were looking down at the paper a bit more than naturally, but we have not done something like this often so I understand because I even looked at my paper more than I had liked to. I still feel you did a great job and the story was very nice.

  8. I did fairly well on my speech. I enjoyed having a manuscript to look at rather than memorizing what to say, so I can focus on gestures and eye contact. I practiced this speech more times than I have other speeches, so I was more prepared. When I practiced, I timed myself at 4 minutes and 30 seconds, but when I gave my speech I ended up with a time under 3 minutes. I believe I rushed it, and if I have any advice for myself, it's that I need to give my speech exactly how I practiced.

Krupo: Your delivery was good. You have a natural talent for public speaking, you always make an impression with each speech you give.

Max: Your intro was funny. You were very enthusiastic about your topic and you were confident in your speech.

The other thing is that I was really enjoying your speech and was a little confused when you threw in the lyrics. Otherwise I really enjoyed your speech. Nice job!

  9. For this speech I had trouble picking a topic. I also had trouble finding things to say about my topic for four minutes. Overall my speech was decent. My eye contact was average at best. My confidence continues to grow and I feel more comfortable up there. It would of helped if I read my speech to someone before I said it. I think that my speaking rate was pretty good. Overall an average speech.

  10. Not gonna lie, for me this was one of my favorite speeches so far this year. I was a bit skeptical about using a manuscript for this speech, but in the end I really liked the method. I was a bit perplexed before giving this speech after having to follow Drew's heart-warming speech, but not really nervous. I may have rushed a bit during this speech because I didn't want to go over the time limit, but I think my volume was either fine or even a bit high at times. This was probably one of the first speeches where I really got into it; I think I put a lot of emotion into it. I like speeches where I can get creative like this one as oppose to more formal informative ones. I definitely practiced for this speech in order to raise the eye contact level, but I'm actually not exactly sure how my eye contact was. I know that there was humored attached to this speech, but I tried ending it with a more serious tone at the end that hopefully got a meaningful message across.

  11. In opposition to Michael, this was one of my least favorite speeches of the year. Having the manuscript in front of me was helpful but I still stumbled over a few words and lost my spot a few times. My eye contact was terrible because I didn't want to look up and loose my spot. I felt pretty prepared because I had everything typed out but I probably should've practiced a lot more. Having visuals was a little awkward for me because I didn't to a good enough job working them into my speech. It was alright, but there are many other speech types that I would prefer over the manuscript.

    3. Alyssa,
I completely agree with you on this being not favorite speech style, but anyways good job on your speech. Although you did not have much eye contact and gestures, you had a good volume, and were able to get the audience’s attention. When you gave your speech you also looked a bit nervous, so I suggest practicing a bit more. In total, you speech was put together very well, and just a bit more practice would make your speech amazing. :)

  12. I feel like my speech went ok, but I wish I had taken more time to write and practice it. I also feel that I neglected eye contact and I had some technical problems because I was unable to print my manuscript an had to read it off my phone. I was glad to be able to give this speech even if I wrote it poorly.

    1. Nick, most recently I found your last few speeches pretty solid. I like the things that you try to explain in your stories and I can relate to them. I can tell for most of your speeches you have some long pauses in there, but there have been less and less as your speeches have gone by. Keep practicing more! Also, I have enjoyed how your endings have been as well. Keep up the nice work.

    2. Hey Nick, I thought that was a really good story you told. I played a lot with my brother and that's how we bounded too. If you need to work on anything it would to practice a conclusion and to try not to end with "and that's it" or something. Otherwise I really liked it.

  13. This speech did not turn out as well as I was hoping for. It was difficult to make eye contact while also reading off of a manuscript. I struggled with looking up because every time that I did, I would lose my place reading. This also affected my poise and made for a less confident speech. Overall, in the future, I don't think I'll be using a manuscript style speech.

  14. This was my best speech by far. I took my time writing this speech and I think it showed. I tried to not stay tied to the words on the paper and make it feel more natural and I think it worked. 15. This was definitely one of my least favorite speeches we've done. I hate having a piece of paper in front of me when I speak. I feel like it took away from connecting with the audience and made it so my eye contact wasn't up to par. My gestures were lacking at best. However, I did enjoy sharing stories of my brother and I constantly trying to one up each other. It was my greatest accomplishment when I was better than him at something and I'm glad I could share that experience with the class.

I truly enjoyed listening to your speech, and you had my full attention the entire time. During your speech, your volume was good and you seemed very confident. However, you did not have much eye contact and gestures, which is understandable, because we had a manuscript in front of us. Other than maybe practicing a bit more next time, your speech was great.

    2. I completely agree. Being actors, I am not a fan of staring at a script - one would think we would be used to it anyways for acting. I did love your story. It was quite interesting and you had me leaning in for how intrigued I was. I am an older brother - obviously you know that. Fun thing is, he has to look under my shadow. But, I am glad you found something that you have enjoyed. I enjoyed the speech. Good job!

  16. For my “Something I Treasure” speech I felt like it did not go to well. Though I did practice, I did not feel very confident about it. When I gave my speech, my volume was ok, but since I had been singing a lot for the past couple of day my throat became dry very quickly. This caused me to have to clear my throat several times, and for some reason after that I would talk very fast. Also during my speech I did my best to keep eye contact, but I definitely lacked gestures. My manuscript was very organized, and it flowed together alright, but it was not fun giving a speech with a manuscript. Personally I think this was my worst speech so far, and that next time I need to practice just a bit more.

  17. I felt good about this speech. I really like the manuscript idea and It helped me remember what I want to say and make sure I don't forget anything. Looking back now, I think I should have focused it more on my parents then my surgery. I ended up skipping part of that explanation and went into what I really treasured. I thought my conclusion was strong and got the pint that I was done and I didn't have to say thank you for an ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed giving this speech and felt very confident in doing so. Having my speech right there just kept all my ideas and thoughts together so I can say everything that I wanted to say. The only thing that I would improve is my volume or just how I was speaking. Overall I really enjoyed this speech and will probably use the manuscript style again.

  19. I thought that my speech went poorly. I was much more prepared the previous Wednesday when I was initially supposed to speak. My clarity was not the best, I fumbled on words and kept losing my place on my paper. On top of that, I skipped a page in the book and didn't realize it until I had begun reading the next page! I was shivering the whole time and was not on my A game. This was my least favorite way to present so far and I was disappointed in how it turned out.

I also trailed off a lot in my speech which aided it to go so long, which I was not expecting. However, I believe i had good volume and my gestures were alright, this was not my best speech ,and I believe I need to improve with the use of a manuscript.

I felt my eye contact was pretty good although it was a manuscript speech. I did look up a few times and lost my spot so that is one thing I don't really like about manuscript speeches. I feel that I am forced to prepare better since I have to write the speech out word for word, and I will always know what to say while giving my speech. I felt I kept decent eye contact in my speech regardless of it being manuscript, and also I think I kept a good pace going throughout most of the whole speech.
